Mission Statement

Maloto’s mission is to help Malawian families improve their quality of life by developing unique projects that address educational, health, social and economic needs. Maloto means dreams in the local languages of Malawi.

About Maloto

Maloto is a dynamic community-based organization based in Mzuzu, Malawi. We believe in the women and children of Malawi and their ability to become strong leaders. Despite being a peaceful nation, Malawi is facing significant social challenges that are keeping our children from reaching their full potential. Over-burdened schools, HIV/AIDS, high poverty rates, and women’s lack of equality are having a devastating impact on our communities. We began our first project in 2003, the Mzuzu Academy, in response to these challenges and to give our children competitive educational opportunities that are currently unavailable. We believe deeply that now, more than ever, our children need access to quality education.

Maloto is committed to local solutions to local problems. Our projects encourage community empowerment, self-reliance and sustainability. Solutions generated by the local people help ensure that community development remains a critical priority, and a goal that is not only obtained, but one that is sustained. Maloto was founded by a group of Malawians living in the United States who had a ‘dream’ to give back to their country and their communities.

Kwithu Student
Lusubilo Phiri lost her mother to HIV/AIDS when she was 2 years old. When she first came to Kwithu, she was very sick and at one point we thought we might lose her. She now visits Kwithu 3 times a week; she is a very bright girl and hopes to attend Mzuzu Academy. Watch a short video.
