Kwithu Women’s Group
The mission of the Kwithu Women’s Group (KWG) is to empower women so
that they are able to stand on their own. When KWG first formed, many of the members
had lost their husbands to HIV/AIDS and were trying to support themselves,
their children as well as an increasing number of orphans in their community. In
addition to the acute problems posed by HIV/AIDS, these women live in a difficult
environment characterized by extreme poverty and high illiteracy
rates. Further, these women live in a male-dominated society that has
often exploited them, and not enabled them to take control of their own destinies. With
the establishment of the Kwithu
Women’s
Group, this is starting to change. The
members are actively participating in community-building activities and
they are starting to see a brighter future. KWG also provides skills
training in modern farming, cooking, sewing, and knitting. Members
make crafts and sell them on the local markets. Their long-term
goal is to be self-reliant.
