Kwithu Orphan Feeding and Community Center

Kwithu women prepare a meal. Kids receive a meal at Kwithu Feeding Center

Formed in 2005, the Kwithu Orphan Feeding and Community Center was originally conceived to provide hot meals to a handful of orphaned children.  Since its inception, Kwithu has expanded its activities and its reach. Now serving over 200 children, the Center also operates a number of other initiatives for children, including after school learning and recreation programs.

Recognizing that one of the biggest challenges facing women was the ability to provide for their families, Kwithu developed a number of income generation projects for women in the community. The center owns and operates its own farm, which not only provides food for the feeding center, but also produces excess produce that is sold in local markets. Women have also been trained in local craft production and their works are now being sold in local markets as well as internationally.

During 2009, Kwithu began a new healthcare initiative and is now organizing HIV/AIDS screenings, education programs and community outreach activities.  This particular project is crucial in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
