Get InspiredNancy HeanschMaloto volunteer Nancy Haensch teaches members of Kwithu Womens Group how to take blood pressure. July 2008 Because only 30% of Malawians have access to medical clinics and there is only one physician and 26 nurses for every 100,000 people, teaching the women of Kwithu about healthcare is important to me. HIV has touched the life of every person at the center and remains a constant threat. Protecting oneself against HIV is even a common theme of poems and songs for both children and adults. I was very proud that, with encouragement and support, all of the women went for testing while I was there. Using medical supplies donated by some of my fellow nurses, we practiced first-aid skills and learned how to monitor blood pressure. The women were eager to learn how to better care for themselves, the children at the center and their own families. It was a gratifying and humbling experience for me to teach these women and watch how they care for each other, despite their own suffering.
