Get InspiredNancy HeanschMaloto volunteer Nancy Haensch helps harvest bean leaves on the Kwithu farm, where most of the food for the Kwithu Feeding Center is grown. There was a feeling of excitement in the air as we set off early in the morning on this day. I had just arrived in Mzuzu and the women of Kwithu were anxious to show me the results of their hard work and commitment. We drove first to visit the site for a new Kwithu Center, followed by a trip to view the storage of maize grown by the women that will feed the orphans in their feeding program for the next year. The bags of maize were stacked up in a pile over five feet tall! The anticipation grew as we drove toward Nkhata Bay where the garden plots were located. The women had cleared the land and planted the beans, but hadn’t yet returned to see if the crop was growing. When we arrived and saw lush, green plants stretching out in every direction, the women began dancing and singing in the field, under the hot sun. Witnessing and sharing the joy of these women was something I treasure. As the weeks passed, I learned many things from my new sisters, but it all started here in this bean field.
